Dua Lipa: pop music and cultural interests
Dua Lipa was born in London on August 22, 1995, to Albanian parents. Her music combines pop choruses with rhythms built for dancing. Three albums trace her development: Dua Lipa, Future Nostalgia and Radical Optimism. Alongside her recording career, she founded Service95, a platform devoted to culture, books and conversations with people from a range of backgrounds.
New Rules and her debut album
Her self-titled debut arrived in 2017. New Rules became one of her signature songs, setting out the boundaries a woman establishes while moving on from a relationship. IDGAF also appears on the record. Together, these songs introduce themes that continue through her work: independence, romantic feelings and self-confidence.
They offer a straightforward starting point before exploring the rest of the album. Listening to this early material also makes it easier to hear the development between her debut and the more disco-oriented arrangements of her second record.
Future Nostalgia puts dancing first
Released in 2020, Future Nostalgia places dance music at the centre of her sound. Don’t Start Now, Physical and Levitating are among the songs associated with this period. Bass lines, catchy choruses and disco references give the record a consistent atmosphere while allowing each track to retain its own pop identity.
The album brought professional recognition as well. Future Nostalgia won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. At the 2022 iHeartRadio Music Awards, Levitating received Song of the Year and Future Nostalgia received Dance Album of the Year.
Collaborations and Dance The Night
Her career includes collaborations with other musicians. Electricity, recorded with Silk City, the duo of Diplo and Mark Ronson, earned her Best Dance Recording at the 2019 Grammys. She also won Best New Artist that year.
Dance The Night took her music into the soundtrack of Barbie. The song received nominations for Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2024 Grammys. Those nominations add to her awards history, but they should be distinguished from her three Grammy wins.
Radical Optimism and its creative team
Her third album, Radical Optimism, was released on May 3, 2024. Its eleven tracks include Houdini, Training Season and Illusion. The creative team includes Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Danny L Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Caroline Ailin.
The record provides another entry into her music after Future Nostalgia. To explore the change between these periods, start with Don’t Start Now, then listen to Houdini and Training Season. Comparing the songs directly is a useful way to discover her evolving repertoire beyond a single familiar hit.
Glastonbury and live performances
In June 2024, Dua Lipa headlined Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage on Friday night. Her performance was among the headline sets made available internationally by the BBC. Concerts therefore form a prominent part of her public career alongside albums and music videos.
The Radical Optimism Tour expanded to numerous cities in 2025, with announced dates across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the United Kingdom and North America. Her official accounts are the best starting points for following further concert announcements.
Service95: books and conversations
Service95, founded by Dua Lipa, publishes stories and recommendations covering culture, travel, style and wellbeing. Its Book Club includes books selected by the singer and conversations with their authors.
The podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service features guests such as Elton John, Charli XCX, Tim Cook and Nadia Murad. It offers another perspective on her public work: a reader and interviewer exploring other people’s experiences alongside her music career.
